Process Modeler supports XPDL roundtripping for BPMN 1.2 only. Since BPMN 2.0 itself is serializable, there will probably be no support for XPDL/BPMN 2.0 roundtrips in the future either, as it is not really needed.

If you need to export in XPDL 2.0, we highly recommend to create your diagrams using BPMN 1.2. Note that the XPDL 2.0 specification does not cover all BPMN 1.2 elements.

It appears that the process modeler should support "roudtrip" to XPDL. I am diagramming in BPMN 2.0 and need to export to XPDL 2.0 (which I understand is aligned with BPMN 1.x).
Is it possible to export to a BPMN 2.0 diagram to XPDL 2.0 format?

I have attached the process and its corresponding WSDL file so that people can try this out on their own machines if they want. I am using Process Modeler 5 with Visio 2003.

I have attempted to find some online or shipped documentation with a step-by-step tutorial that may help shed some light on the process of defining and exporting a BPMN process to BPEL, but nothing of this sort is available. In general I have found the documentation for ITP Process Modeler to be greatly inferior to the competition products. Can someone please tell me if there is some great source of documentation that I may be missing.

Please refer to the BPMN specification where the mapping from BPMN to BPEL is defined in detail...

1. Assigne statements are generated from the BPMN 'Assignments' Attribute on the Activity. (Make sure to switch to 'Full View' -> top right button in the Attribute Explorer to see all the BPMN Attributes)

2. Switches are generated from XOR Gateways
- each outgoing SequenceFlow will map to a BPEL case and the Expression of the SequenceFlow will map to the 'condition' attribute of the BPEL case
- the default outgoing SequenceFlow will map to a BPEL otherwise

You might be interested to know that Process Modeler 4 SR4 (next Service Release) will in addition to the BPEL export also offer the possibility to import BPEL and therefore provide round tripping!

I have used Oracle BPEL for over a year and I can manage it pretty well.
Now I have problems understanding the BPMN and BPEL mapping since it is not quite obvious (at least to me)

- I opened your loanFlowPlus and generated BPEL
- Made a new project in JDeveloper and verified the generated BPEL
- everything OK
- went back to BPMN model and tried to understand few things:

1. where did the assign statements surrounding getCreaditRating-call come from ? Where are they defined in the BPMN model ?

2. where in the BPMN model did the contents of the switch-statements come from ?

Rick,
Find an exam which contains events (Intermediate on the flow and an activity border timer event).
Please note: XPDL 1.0 does not have a definition for events. This means that there is no direct mapping possible.
We map this events to "route activities". You will get such a XPDL information message if you validate your diagram with XPDL Element Validation enabled.

If you will use a process engine such as Carnot (see http://www.carnot.ag) which is able to read in XPDL files there are much more possibilities to map directly for this target environment. Process Modeler can easily be enhanced with a Carnot extension .

But – BPMN offers different synchronization mechanisms that can be mapped to BPEL:

Janko,

correct! Maybe an insignificant correction to your statement: BPMN element don't have coordinates, it's their visual representations (->shapes), which have coordinates.

Some element types (Pools, Lanes, DataObjects, Annotations, etc.) might have several representations on different Visio sheets e.g. due to the use of the "Is identical to..." function.

Hi Manfred,

> I guess this would match your requirements, too?

I guess yes. I'll be happy just with coordinates of center for each element, which you need too, I suppose.

Best regards

Hi Janko,

in the planning for the PM 2.2 core functionality, we are considering the SimpleXML import feature, which requires Visio-related (shape coordinates, sheet information, etc.) to be added to a SimpleXML export file first.

I guess this would match your requirements, too?

Best regards
